Who could have seen this coming, what with every time in history when a despot takes power the “intellectuals” flee and/or are purged?

I hear folks say they’ll move and it makes me wonder what country would want citizens that allowed fascists to take control of their previous country?

The US accepted top talent from both Italy and Germany during WWII.

Ordinary citizens are going to have a hard time jumping ship, but star researchers will be able to.

I live in the E.U. so the “schengen agreement” allows me to move anywhere and work anywhere within that space. Italians are still welcome even though they elected a fascist, so if i move fast enough to portugal (or whatever country looks least fascist at that time) won’t have a chance but to take me in.

Germany. It is close though, so leaving has become a real thought. Our conservatives already repeat the shit the fascists are yapping about in hope of getting some of those sweet voters guided by fear and hate.

Probably unrealistic to hope otherwise but it also feels defeatist to be like “Nazis will for sure take over”.

intellectuals are the first ones to be purged before anyone else, hence they flee first.

For a total of twenty five individuals.

    The headline conveniently leaves out.

It’s not going to be just 25 when all is said and done. Multiple other countries are looking at ways to recruit American researchers or bring home their own nationals who have been working as professors in the US.
