A virulently anti-LGBTQ+ Mobile, Alabama, pastor has dedicated the month of September to spreading anti-trans hate throughout the city.
Pastor Travis Johnson spearheaded a project to hang banners through downtown Mobile that declare, “Protect Our Children From Gender Ideology.”
This vapid phrase “gender ideology” has so much right-wing ignorance packed into it. Conservatives abuse language as casually as they abuse people.
Like so many dog whistles, this is a phrase built around a known word like “gender” and some multisyllabic word that lightly confuses the ignorant into believing they understand what’s being said.
Calling something that happens to someone an ideology is ridiculous. They really believe people choose to be trans, choose to live a more dangerous life.
Aren’t they trying for some “ideal” gender anyway?
It’s the conservative mindset where there is normal (which means the ways they are and see things) opposed to political or ideological. They never consider that their own outlook on the world might be political or ideological. This lack of self-awareness and self-reflection is intrinsic to conservatism. It’s related to how, for them, every problem is someone else’s fault, even as they preach to everyone about personal responsibility. They assume they are personally doing the responsible and right thing all the time, so any difficulty that comes up must be due to someone else being less responsible and doing the wrong thing.

Interestingly, Jean-Paul Sartre was referring to anti-Semites here, a term which has itself been irresponsibly twisted to mean “opposing Zionism and/or the government of Israel.”

The church has a perverted ideology, too concerned with others folks sexualities, which is none of their business. When they’re not literally diddling kids, they’re metaphorically diddling kids with deceptive crap like this.
