YouTube has ads? (No, I don’t pay for their bs subscription, either)
Laughs in yt-dlp
Part of why I bought a commercial display as a TV.
Super cheap for the size, made to be on all day long and no “smart” features at all.
oh didnt realize that was an option - where they have those?
Used markets. Companies selling old stuff, mostly.
What would that matter depending on exactly what you’re using to provide content to your tv. I have two smart tvs, I don’t use the smart aspect of them. I use streaming sticks on both of them. You don’t have to purchase a commercial TV for that. In fact a lot of commercial TVs still have all the streaming connectivity capabilities as well. I know this because I installed them regularly as menu boards in many many sites. You never required to connect any TV to the internet. You never required to connect any system to the internet. But like I said it’s going to matter what you’re using to actually get content to your tv.
What I’ve found annoying with smart TVs in my family is also their start up time. Displaying the company logo for a minute before you can actually do or display anything is for some reason much more annoying than turning on my ten year old TV and then watch the even older laptop boot into xubuntu for a minute.
I don’t know what kind of smart TV do you have but both of my Samsung TVs come on immediately to whatever I need. If I turn on my Xbox and hit the button they immediately come up to my xbox, if I turn on my fire stick they immediately come to the fire stick. I have three Vizio TVs as well and none of them have any issues coming up. I even have one fire TV that just immediately pops up it’ll display the logo for like half a second and then come into the menu.
Sure but the default ootb is a lot less hostile.
Again, I’m not sure what the issue is. I’ve had far more issues setting up commercial TV boards then any consumer grade boxes. I install and repair both so I do this a lot.
I thought those TV have pretty low refresh rates.
60 fps 1080p, I don’t need more for watching movies on the couch
For normal TV and youtube watching that should be fine. If they can play vidoes all day it should be fine
Probably not going to have those 120hz refresh rates with this billboards.
Well if you’re gaming you’re better of with a monitor anyway.
To each their own but I will never understand the need for 120hz on tvs for couch gaming.
I love that smoothness. My computer monitor is 240hz. That is less noticable from 120 to 240. But 60 to 120 is def a big improvement. .
People watch ads?
Yes, a sixth plugin against ads. Thanks for the recommendation, we must arm ourselves against the tech overlords.
This one is built on top of ublock you won’t need both. It blocks then “clicks” all the ads ruining their campaign metrics.
Ah thanks, I thought you needed it as a secondary. Btw I meant it as a good thing “the sixth plugin” but I get that it sounded sarcastic hahaha
So would you say it’s worth replacing ublock with adnauseam?
If you have the extra bandwidth and CPU sure (it’s really a negligible difference)
Honestly though the ad companies probably have metrics that teach them to start ignoring you if you click on everything, so it’s probably not that impactful. Doesn’t hurt though 🤷♀️
I just keep hitting next until I get a good ad 💪
The only time I ever see a YouTube ad is when I watch a family member pull up YouTube on their phone. It looks literally unwatchable that way. There are so many workarounds to this issue that I don’t understand how people can tolerate intrusive ads every 2 seconds.
Their sacrifice is our gain, if everyone was on Adblockers all the tech companies would make sure to block all Adblockers, even harder than what they are trying right now
There’s plenty of ways to get around this crap, but there’s vanishingly little on the platform worth watching.
At some point, why bother with the Slop Website to begin with?
Are we still talking about YouTube? Because if so, I’m mesmerized at how wrong you are
but there’s vanishingly little on the platform worth watching.
Incorrect. YouTube has a massive library of special interest videos and very high value channels- but like every other platform their algorithm just fucking sucks at promoting them over other mindless bait videos.
A video or channel you can’t find might as well not exists.
Even past that, I’ve seen my fair share of quality channels die out or sell out or otherwise go sour.
A video or channel you can’t find might as well not exists.
Considering the amount of hours I’ve spend on YouTube, they definitely exist
Given my prior experience with the site, spending any amount of time measured in “hours” picking through YouTube libraries sounds absolutely awful.
Idk…I’ve found throughout the years that there are increasingly greater and greater amounts of long-form content available on YouTube to watch. Of late, I’ve watched some Louis Theroux documentaries, some documentaries on abandoned facilities, and some real A&E and ambulance emergency shows. There is a ton of interesting content on there if you look for it. I guess I just find the number of streaming services to be too staggering to bother with. So I go with free alternatives like YouTube with an ad blocker and things like PlutoTV and tubi.
Wait, is this real?
Having to use my TV to watch YouTube recently instead of my PC until I can get a new cooler for my CPU, I can confidently say “yes.”
Only on my TV, where my family watches youtube through our PS4. Old kids shows and taskmaster and the like. It’s incredibly obnoxious— ads play when you open the video, and if you want to simply restart it move to the correct place it’ll play the ads again, and the ads can be 60 seconds long each time. They also pop these unskippable ads up at the most obnoxious moments in the videos.
The “next ad” button often does bring the time-to-skip down by ten seconds or so, at least. Still obnoxious. But I’m not sure about a better way to access YouTube and Disney+ and Prime Video etc etc on the tv from one device, and, well, I have a 4 year old, so doing without is not much of an option.
I kid you not, I bought a DVD player over this nonsense. Now my kids watch the same few used Disney movie and show DVDs however much they like, and I’m not paying these clowns monthly to be abused by them.
Do you need to ask?
As well as removing the thumbs down button on the shorts
Every time they push some right wing bullshit into my feed, I would downvote it and laugh at how it only had 100 or so likes while every other video in the feel had thousands. Then they got rid of the downvote button. I think the fascists whined about getting ratio’d even if the number wasn’t posted. It is only a matter of time before they stop showing the number of likes to hide their lack of support.
If you have a Samsung TV TizenTube is awesome. There is an android version of it too but can’t recall its name colbolt something…
It can be intimidating to try and install on your Samsung TV. But once you figure it out it’s super easy.
This isn’t on YouTube premium. Just fyi. Most places run ads on the free plans.
I wouldn’t know
And this after they worked for tears to make Invidious unworkable
Newpipe still working well.
Ublock on Firefox is great.
I’m looking forward to DDG browser on mobile
Use a Firefox fork (or Firefox) and have it working today!
Isn’t just another chromium fork that disables ublock thanks to Manifest V3?
