One thing that always confused me about this… if the price is so dynamic that it can change per person, how does the price get tagged to that person all the way to the register? It’s not like there’s a new barcode or rfid tag that magically appears between the milk isle and the front of the store.

If it can detect a specific person near the tag, it can detect that same person at the register. You work with loyalty cards?

Hmm… I suppose technically they can ID your phone via Bluetooth / wifi / However, but that’s too coarse grained. And what if it’s me and you reaching for a tub of butter at the same time? What price is displayed and who gets “tagged” with it? What happens on a typical grocery store shelf where there’s 8000 items within reaching distance? Do all the tags change? lol

Maybe nfc or rfid for more specific detection? But that’s really close … You”d almost have to purposely hold your phone / card next to the tag for that… and oh by the way, the tag would all of a sudden stop being a dumb eink display with a one-way mechanism, and it would require the ability to do all kinds of fancy radio telemetry not to mention communications.

I feel like if anything were to practically happened it would be closer to the Amazon store concept where they didn’t have any employees and just a bunch of cameras, watching your face and what you picked up and put in your bag or whatever. And then “AI” (offshore people) would charge it accordingly. It would still only work, of course, for use cases were single consumer presence was detected nearby, etc. oh and can you imagine Someone going to a store with a phone zoomed in on the prices recording a video and then watching the prices change as they got closer?

        Interesting thought experiment

I worked on a project, prototyping these. I don’t think the tech is quite there yet to recognize YOU, adjust the price on individual items, and update the tag as you walk up.

But if they could figure out how to Minority Report it reliably, they totally would.

Don’t worry they will. One day you wont be able to look at prices without using your personal device. That way you will know YOUR price, which will be determined by the store analysis of your finances and what they think you can afford.

I think you mean dynamic pricing? Digital tags have been the norm in my country for probably half a decade now, with no issues or crazy price hikes

OP doesn’t mean shit because these aren’t their words. They’re a reddit repost bot spamming ragebait

Honestly, the real problem is that ragebait works. Like, if that’s what people decide to engage with on social media, then that’s what’s going to show up, whether it’s skimmed highly-scoring Reddit content or not.

You could try to produce “no-ragebait” communities.

You could try to introduce a recommendation algorithm that uses heuristics to try to identify ragebait and let users who don’t want it filter it out or simply recommend based on their voting.

Man, this place was doing fine with original content.

Quit flooding all these communities with reddit reposts. And mark yourself as a bot while you’re at it

The tag is not concerning me as much as all the shit covering the milk jug.
