Oh, speaking of weird spellings. The first letter of NATO alphabet is spelled “Alfa” not “Alpha”.
For people who want to know why - it makes the pronunciation less ambiguous for non-English speakers, since the NATO Alphabet was developed for use by English, French, and Spanish speakers.
All these years I’ve been pronouncing it wrong as alp-ha? Curses!
Oh neat, I did not know why myself, but this makes total sense.
For similar reasons they insist on 3 is “tree” and 5 is “fife.”
