Even if our Earth is a one in a trillion statistical anomaly, that still leaves like a billion or so Earths that could have life. Whether they are intelligent and whether they achieved intelligence at the same time as us is a whole different story.

Is it that unlikely? The universe isn’t just really big it’s also fucking old. We might have missed the party or we might be the first. I’d be hard pressed to put a statistical number on that.
