Bro!

It failed the spouse test when I last tried last year

Ig they’re rolling it out in waves, they decided to overhaul their app UI…for the worse IMO

Here’s a comment I wrote on it about a year ago
Tldr; they are an early example of open source enshittification before enshittification was even coined (iirc)
This is going to go back quite a ways, and much of my knowledge is old at this point so some details might be off.
~15 years ago Plex as we know it started out as an OSX fork of the 0G Xbox homebrew software XBMC (Later renamed Kodi (For those who don’t know, XBMC was XBox Media Center and would turn the 0g Xbox into the cheapest Home Theater PC you could get at the time, man those were the days lol))
Plex was only briefly open source and then was quickly closed when they incorporated a year or so after they had something functional. They never made any promises about not charging or being open source or anything, so that’s why I’m generally fine with Plex
Sometime around 2012ish Emby came along as THE open source alternative to Plex and things were good. MOST of it was supposed to stay open source as was promised. From the beginning they kept build scripts n such closed source, probably should have caught on them, but heh ya know hindsight and all that.
Then around 2014/5 they took it all closed source, relicensed it and introduced their paywall including locking away already existing features. This is what pissed me and many others off and this is when and why Jellyfin split off promising to be truly fully open source forever. (There was a ton of drama about it at the time, but it looks like Embys Q&A thing a bit back doesn’t even bother to mention it, imagine that lol)
I don’t have a problem with subscriptions on open source software myself, but the way they went about it…yea. fuck em

Am I doing this right
Well if you ask me, not really, I disavowed emby years ago and afaic its just Plex and Jellyfin in this space to me

They like completely overhauled the UI lol

I think this chart might be a bit dated, I’m fairly certain Disney has taken full control of Hulu, not 67%

Jellyfin, unfortunately failed the spouse test when I last tried last year.
Besides, I don’t think for this particular case it would help much, they both pull their data from the same places iirc

True, if we’re going by a strict definition.
But in practice it means (at best) suppression of negative facts “for the cause” even when they’re true which is problematic in of itself, but it also encourages exaggeration of the pros and tearing down the opposition even if the opposition has good points worth considering

Tankies love to conflate their authoritarian brand of communism as the only communism or the only “true left”
But you can absolutely be a communist without simping for authoritarian governments.
Substituting a right-wing authoritarian system for a “left-wing” authoritarian system isnt going to solve anything

I wouldn’t go that far the source code is verifiable and while there have been some…very questionable architectural decisions (Making the modlog less transparent, making the voting system less robust etc), it’s mostly all good.
We can never be truly sure that the version running on .ml is the same version built from the publicly available source or something like a private custom version

The term “Thrediverse” got coined before Meta wanted to try their hand at EEE with the Fediverse iirc
Also “Fediverse” is already taken to mean the overarching umbrella for any software that uses the ActivityPub protocol, everything from Loops to Masto to Friendica to PieFed

Funnily enough, for all of the prominent Tankie talk about not wanting to be an echo chamber and welcoming debate, .ml actually has this comm instance-blocked LMAO

There are actually plenty of tankies on Reddit, but with Reddit you have to pretty much seek it out because of the massive user base
Legend goes that dessalines actually started Lemmy because their Reddit main got perm banned because he went a lil too tankie

I’ve switched to the neutral term “Threadiverse” as that seems applicable to all “Reddit style forums and link aggregators” for most things
I use Lemmy-verse here because the next biggest, PieFed, already has the entire Triad as part of their default blocks in the new instance setup flow (which btw Tankies hate PieFed and have declared it to be “anti-communist software trying to push out Lemmy” lmao)

Tankie Triad users have been known to make trolling accounts across instances to stir up trouble in this manner

It’s mostly the Tankie Triad consisting of Hexbear, Lemmygrad and .ml
I tend to focus on .ml because Hex and Grad are generally defederated from by most major instances because they are even more extreme than .ml on top of the fact that there’s a perception among instances that if they defederate from dessalines’ (head Lemmy dev, main .ml admin) .ml instance there will be retaliation in the form of pull back of technical support for their instance (Which, yea, I could totally see him doing that)

I hope there’s not any XP waste
That’s the dumbest shit I’ve heard in a long time LMAO
I have no doubt that Tylenol isn’t as safe as it’s made out to be, but RFKs brain worms swung way too far in the other direction lol
