The U.S. national average price of diesel on Thursday surpassed $6 a gallon for the first time ever, according to price tracker GasBuddy, as the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran and Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s refineries have squeezed supply.
Diesel fuels trucks, trains, ships and heavy equipment that keep global supply chains moving. It is also crucial to running farm equipment.
The latest surge in fuel costs is adding to inflationary pressures that have already strained consumers and businesses this year, creating a political headache for Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers as they seek to defend thin congressional majorities in November’s midterm elections.
That makes the cost of everything hauled by truck go up.

Ukraine’s attacks have not raised any prices. It’s oil refineries they’ve been hitting, not petrol storage facilities. All that unrefined oil is simply moved to mostly India and China - refined product is not impacted by that.
It’s really kinda ironic to see as a German that the US is nearing our prices and those we’ve been paying / ripped off forever all losing their mind. Our current diesel price, if I calculated correctly, is around 10$/gal.
Only thing to be careful of is that US gallon is only 3.79 litres, not 4.55 litres like it is in the UK. (Makes the fuel economy of American cars seem even worse than they really are.)
If the diesel price is about €2.33/l at the moment and the dollar is about €0.86, then German diesel is ~$10.26/gallon at the moment.

Yup, I calculated with 3.8 for gal/L and almost forgot to convert the euro price to Usd thereafter 😁.

Here in Melbourne, Australia - the diesel price is currently the equivalent of $8.60 USD / gallon ($2.65AUD / litre).

Looking diesel go for 2.17€/lt in Italy and that with a 0.17€ discount made from cutting taxes on it (so it’s actually 2.34€/lt) makes me wish we had $6 per gallon. Would cut our prices by 1€/lt straight. Lucky I have an EV, but if I hade an ICE I’d be fearing the day I have to go to the gas station as the day the mortgage payment arrives.
