MapQuest stood up to President Donald Trump, and now its app is reaping the rewards.
The “OG of online mapping,” as the company calls itself, announced on Thursday that it would not change the name of Lake Ontario on its maps to Lake America, despite Trump’s executive order directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service. As a result, MapQuest’s mobile app downloads soared, sending the iOS app to the No. 4 position on the U.S. App Store’s Top Charts for apps (not including games) as of Monday morning on the U.S. east coast.
MapQuest also reached the No. 8 position overall in the U.S. App Store across both apps and games, and it became the No. 1 Navigation app in the United States.
I wish there were more competitors for products like Google Photos. I would switch, but I’m so ingrained at this point that I don’t know if there is any leaving.

The company is a darling company among tech nerds for that fact plus the focus on security+privacy plus being open-source and having a generous free tier plan. The company has channeled its success into a few different directions, such as a 2FA authenticator app and also into something that looks like a secure/encrypted Google Drive, which sounds interesting but I haven’t tried it yet since I don’t do a lot of cloud-storing of files.
Seconded, I’ve been using Ente for a couple of years now and I still love it. I pay five bucks a month for 200 GB.
Fun fact: one of their redundant data centers is in a bomb shelter. Just in case, y’know?

Caveat, I don’t take pictures for the purpose of saving them. Like family photos or events or whatever. So I’m not really in the market for such a service.
I just did some research and Proton Drive does do photos and automatically backs up your phone photos. I’m not sure if they will pass the Lemmy Purity Test™ though.
Ente is another alternative, and hasn’t been in any controversy (so far). They have a great 2FA app too.

That’s not a competitor if you have to self host. I self host it to move away from Google but I would not call it a competitor.

Have a look at Ente. I’ve completely moved over to it from GPhotos. I did so originally for privacy reasons (end-to-end encryption &etc) but the 10G of free storage is plenty for me and their web/phone apps are good.
I looked at it. It’s inexpensive. The last thing holding me back is changing the email to my proton one for 100 accounts across the web.
