“AI” is a tool to move towards labor post scarcity. That’s all that it is. Billionaires using and owning AI is the problem. Billionaires scamming people with AI related buzzwords is the problem. BILLIONAIRES are the problem. Not AI.
Is nuclear tech a problem? No. It can be used for electricity generation. It can also be used to make bombs. The tech in itself is not a problem.
Sadly, most people on the left have taken the stance of blind opposition, without engaging in good faith arguments, without even attempting to understand the technology. These folks have opinions that range from:
- AI is not actually “intelligence”, where they try to show how it has 0 uses anywhere. These opinions are blatantly dissociated from reality, as professionals do indeed use AI to delegate a lot of tasks.
- “AI will take our jobs, creating a permanent underclass”. This is assuming that all of us live under authoritarianism. This is mostly Americans spreading their doomerism. Still a valid critique, though one that often incorrectly assumes that this new underclass will not riot and cause change through violence.
- AI damages the environment: True, but some additional context is required. The oil industry, the transportation industry and so on causes much much more environmental damage. Coming up with valid, constructive solutions to regulate the tech industry’s emissions makes sense. However, calling for total bans and moratoriums for development and research in AI is so so dumb.
Anywho, this comment is likely going to invite a lot of trolls. I won’t engage with anyone not arguing in good faith.
If the technology was energy efficient that’d be one thing, but we’re accelerating climate change and poisoning the planet in order to automate what are in many cases creative or intellectual jobs, not hard labor, and society isn’t even seeing any gains from it. Cost of living is higher than ever, and social programs are being cut like crazy.
So who actually benefits? See OP.
You’re right for the most part, but I find it hard to find much positivity.
When efficient “AI” models run locally and solve specific tasks without insane energy use, that’ll be different. That’s probably coming, once the bubble bursts. But the bubble isn’t going to take the people who created it down with them, as usual.
these things are not related however. while AI has made much of it possible, this all traces back to 2016. you can literally watch the cost of living metrics start to rise at a exponential rate starting in 2016, then layoffs in 2020. there was no punishment to companies for being greedy during these times, they have learned the public will just accept anything to get Thier goods and services…
but your energy use argument falls flat when you look things like the steel industry and even just comparable data workloads and simulations that were being run. yes the power usage is astronomical, but when you consider the scaling of the same afformentioned things, they account for the same amount of power consumption…
but this wouldn’t even be a issue if nuclear and renewables + batteries were in heavy use instead of ancient coal and gas power plants thanks to lobbying.

To continue on the nuclear analogy: Yes it resulted in bombs that can kill us all multiple times over, but nuclear energy isn’t completely neutral either. It encourages centralization of infrastructure and the dangers associated with it result in regulation by governments. Both of these shaped societies.

your talking about late-stage capitalism like we weren’t seeing this coming in the 2000s. the moment that Microsoft got out of that antitrust lawsuit under bush spelt the end to independent technological growth and with it comes secular control that leads to what we see today.
openai and audacity are both perfect examples of when law makers choose to ignore corporate interests in destroying competition and setting presidence.

Machine learning allows for a much more thorough analysis of all the massive datasets created by surveillance and government records etc… That is new. The whole DOGE charade was most likely just a front to get those kids admin access to the IRS and healthcare databases so those could be scraped over to Palantir. There’s also a reason that the Flock camera epidemic started now and not in the 90’s and that’s that now all that data can actually be used.
The deskilling via automation is now also applying to the last thing that was thought to be safe, human thought. The brain is a muscle, and like any muscle, it will atrophy if not used. A technology that allows people to use their brain less is a technology that will atrophy peoples brains. People being less capable is a bad thing for them and the class they represent. And then there’s the fact that none of this is no longer contained to the workplace either. Kids using chatgpt to do their homework or parents outsourcing the responsibility of parenting (for example in the form of helping their kid to study for a test) to AI are also problems in the very same way.
The fact that late-stage capitalism is predictable isn’t a counterargument to being critical of LLM’s as a technology. Who did you think were going to be the primary architects of how that technology is used? If a mentally ill kid with a documented history of homicidal ideation shoots up a school, should we blame that kid, or the fact that somebody gave that kid a gun? “Guns don’t kill people, people do” am I right? The point of the ban is to stop the spread while we start to make intelligent decisions. It’s a lesson we should have learned with fossil fuels. It took too long to get regulations in place and by then it was too convenient and useful for them to have any teeth.
but that’s the problem, it never would be in place. we knew the risk of lead poisoning before lead was put into fuels. we knew that smog was a biproduct of high concentrations of burning anything.
citygas existed before petroleum, London was dense with smog 100 years before the first car. “Miasma Lung” was a thing, we understood it. but it was ignored because the East India Trading Company had a conglomerate that had the king’s ear and coin purse.
why do you think it’s not any different today. in 250 years, nothing has changed. the same people that were a conglomerate in England spread with colonisation, made beurocracy a staple of business.
all such a law would do is restrict educational research by independents and individuals, while companies continued to use it, to worse and worse outcomes without punishment, as for the same reason petroleum is a issue.
85% of petroleum use is for commercial traffic, NOT private. ships, trucks, commercial airplanes and manufacturing.
85% of AI usage is by companies pressing their employees to use it and companies deploying it to replace previously efficient human workflows with innapropriate workflows with LLMs bumbling through it…
or outright using it where scripts or simple logic gates would work. the problem is and always has been a lack of control over businesses and billionaires. plain and simple.

any complex problem, they ignore everything to achmans razor it into simplicity… when you can’t do that with everything.
LLMs have benifits, more so local LLMs above all else. decades of “Cloudifying” everything has led to most of the issues they have problems with. power usage for datacenters was always going up to meet the demand of less companies and consumers using local products…
it’s the whole “there is too many cars on the road” problem. it’s not the cars, it’s that there is a lot of people and this is infrastructure problems.
but once you move past the ethics you reach the core issue. no one is investing into power grid modernization. if they did that and forced these companies to maintain their own airgapped cooling solutions, it would solve it’s self.
