Behind the bastards did a great run down of what happened. Basically, we snubbed their religious leaders, cut basic services, and left unnecessary destruction in our wake. We also left the Iraqi army to rot. Instead of getting a large amount of well trained and armed men to do something productive, we left them to do what they did.

We kinda did, why invade when you can just give a faction that benefits you shittons of diplomatic and financial support to achieve power, then military aid to keep the population from resisting. But this type of approach doesn’t work against countries that don’t let it, hence why you see a different track for Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea.
