Several crew members of a ship that collided with a bridge in Baltimore almost two years ago are still being held in the US by federal authorities despite the fact that no criminal charges have been brought against them.

In the early hours of 26 March 2024, the MV Dali departed the port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka. While navigating the Fort McHenry channel, the 1,000ft-long Singapore-flagged cargo vessel lost power before striking the bridge. The impact resulted in the deaths of six people who were working on the bridge at the time.

« Authorities have confiscated crew members’ passports to restrict travel, the sources said. They are allowed to move freely around Baltimore, but require the FBI’s permission to travel to other states.

“I’ve never seen this [detainment] before,” said a source. “It’s very unusual. But nobody wants to get into a shouting match with the FBI »

FBI can do whatever the fuck they want apparently because you know… it’s not appropriate to tell them not to

The other part of this is that their employers are footing the bill for all of this. And these folks aren’t being held in jail or anything. I don’t know where they are but presumably they are in some extended stay hotel somewhere and still getting paid.

To me, it sounds like the shipping company is bending over backwards to placate the FBI and somehow avoid super huge fines. And as long as the shipping company is paying for it, the FBI is in no hurry.

The more time passes, the more chances witnesses and evidence is lost, too.

    Two years

    2026 - 2 = 2024.

No no, that’s impossible. That would have been under a President who Respects the Constitution. No way they’d just ignore the 5th amendment like this.

Trump is worse, but we can also acknowledge that Biden was catastrophic for the trajectory of the US.

I can’t believe Biden still thinks people give a shit what he thinks, if I were him I would disappear to an island and never talk to the press again I would be so full of shame for destroying my countries future and placing control directly in fascists lap.

“…and then when you drive your car away from being repaired and realize it is still existentially broken we condescend you and tell you to be happy your car works at all because the other repair shop would have totally broken your car way worse!”

“Remember folks, if we aren’t the repair shop for you and you are unhappy with the quality of work we do it is because you chose other repair shops in town in the past and forced us to become this bad so it is YOUR fault if our service fails to satisfy your basic needs!”

Obama was kind of nice, from an outsiders perspective. He’s also still a respected man who gets invited to public speaking events.

On the one hand that sucks, on the other hand, sailors are habitually away from home for long stretches of time, and they are getting paid to do nothing right now.

I’d like to know what the exact circumstances of their detainment are, but we likely won’t find out. It’s possible the FBI gave them a deal like “if you stick around for the investigation, you’ll get immunity”.
