It seems a lot more “de-centralized” than the rest of the 'verse, including lemmy & Mastodon, which i more poly-centric.

Since it’s fully decentralized, it’s not possible to moderate except through Web of Trust, of which that was weaponized by the likes of Vitor Pampalana (I spelled his name wrong, probably), and whoever is behind Iris. One former user of Nostr (he uses a self-hosted Pleroma instance now) even warned about it, as that was apparently a social credit system already in place on Nostr.

Because projects funded by Jack Dorsey have a track record of going to shit

Anything decentralized doesn’t go to trash normally, even if Dorsey is funding a bit of it. Heck, he vibe coded (had AI code for him) Bitchat, and I think it can use Nostr. White Noise is Nostr-based too, but that’s a messenger.

You can do that on Nostr clients that support it if I’m not mistaken. I’ll have to ask my producer about it.

You may already know this, but I’ll say it anyway: It’s possible to follow hashtags on Mastodon, and so basically following topics.

It does rely on people putting relevant hashtags on their posts, but do you want to hear from someone who doesn’t do that?

        Why wouldn’t I?

Hashtags are not even close to a reliable way to follow a subject. The fact that people can post without them, means a lot of people don’t. Not because they don’t have something interesting to say, but because they are posting it for their followers. The entire culture around how discussion should be conducted is different among users used to the twitter format.

To post on lemmy, your post must be associated with a relevant community. Hence, posts go out to subscribers interested in the subject, rather than to the followers of the user. As such, posts live or die on the merit of their content. Not who posted it.

In 2024, in an article reporting on the project’s funding, Business Insider claimed to have identified fiatjaf, and had found two websites previously published by this person to disseminate the work of Olavo de Carvalho, a far-right conspiracy theorist

    Oh oh

He was doxxed in 2022, not 2024. That was misinformed, because he was known to be working on Nostr since then. Probably all the way back since 2021.

The micro-blogging aspect is what started it. You can do a lot more with it, though it’s centralizing somewhat through a few clients like Primal and Amethyst.

I use Nostr myself, and so does my producer (this is where we call out a lot of nonsense that some people spew on there).

A lot of people think you can game the so-called algorithm that doesn’t exist on Nostr, though Primal seems to be an exception to the rule.
