Exactly. I think most of America had no idea who he was. My wife had no clue who Kirk was. We even watched that South Park episode where Cartman mimics him. I assumed she knew who he was for some reason.
I’ve known about him since the 2016 election. I was appalled by his early 20s, raving mad MAGA character. I thought we were stuck with him for decades and decades because he was so young. Nope.
I also was not super familiar outside recognizing his name. I did a quick read on Wikipedia. Literally the only thing he has ever done in life is to sell hatred and lies to the maga idiots of my country, and he was sadly very successful at it. Also his wife is a former Miss America. Taking this fuckwit off the board is a net positive for human society.
Given that the reaction from media on the left also shows a very different reaction Kirk vs. Hortman, I think your estimation of the difference between the two is not reflective of what’ll be the final reaction to these two events.

I only knew of him as some right wing edgelord troll type until a month ago or so. Never saw him speak.
