Chronically high intake of sugar especially from soft drinks can definitely contribute to type 2 diabetes

If you don’t already have T2D then sugar intake won’t give you T2D. It might make you overweight which might give you T2D but that’s not really the sugar.
Conversely, plenty of people eating a healthy balanced diet who are not overweight develop T2D.
