Because being paid doesn’t mean you’re free. Or is the only type of legitimate slave the typical American kind? It’s not black and white, there’s nuances here. If the black slaves in America were paid, it wouldn’t have been slavery….? Because that’s the logic that’s being used.
It really just sounds like you’re trying to justify not calling people who aren’t free slaves when they still were by every other metric.
They didn’t have much other option, so what do you call that other than justified slavery?
They were paid, and rather well. It was a work program, like Roosevelt’s New Deal.
