Yes I suspect that the original intent here was less about supernatural brownies points and much more about harmful lifestyle traps. The seven deadly sins seem to me to be mental compulsions that can lead to fixated and broken lifestyles without awareness or pushback. Like feeling sexual attraction is great, but not if your day to day life is focused solely on it. Relaxation and rest is great, but can lead to stagnation if not unchecked.
I’m not saying the Bible or Torah or other such texts weren’t legitimately religious scripture to the devout, but they were also basically the popular self help books of the time as well, as I understand things
Yes, also important to note that generally they were called the deadly sins because once you committed them you were damned forever. So the “actual” sin they convey is the extreme of any of them.
So the “deadly” part of sloth was not laying around the house one day. It was the commitment to a life of sadness and self-pity. Greed is not desiring personal wealth, it’s when you start destroying other people’s lives to enrich yourself etc.
