You can grab an adapter for the large bar style canisters of CO2 for about 15 or 20 bucks online. Just hide the bottle under a counter or something and run the very thin line up to the unit. It works great.
The bonus is that the cost per bottle goes down to about a penny and you’re not giving them a dime.
Idk, people make beer at home. I’d think you could use some of that stuff and make fizzy water. Fountain drinks are highly profitable, so it’d be super cheap in the long run.

After I posted the link here, I went back again, as they were cheaper than I thought they would be.
Now it says €88.90… 🤔
It sucks that Sodastream is an Isreali company, It has finally got me mostly off sugery sodas.
But now I don’t really want to get new cartridges, even third party, as I don’t want to support them even through licensing fees

There aren’t any license fees, Sodastream is well out of protection now.
Just don’t buy sodastream brand refills.

I still suspect that the third party cartridges require the manufacturer to pay a license fee to Sodastream

Where I live there are so many third parties offering refills that doing it yourself is always more expensive.

There are similar adapters available at lots of places online.
There are tons of soda stream alternatives now, even some that don’t require Co2, (but they’re probably a lot more expensive).
I’ve no idea what any of them are like though.
