“It will be a combination of economic isolation the world has never seen before, and the continued blockade in the Strait of Hormuz that will keep anything from going in or out of the Iranian ports,” [Scott Bessent] added.
The most economically isolated country in the world, North Korea, isn’t doing great but it’s still around and it’s still a crazy dictatorship that’s not going anywhere soon. Cuba too has suffered the US’ economic wrath for a full 66 years and it’s still around too.
I’d say the US’ track record in successful economic isolation of people they don’t like isn’t stellar.
As always, the one thing you can count on with absolute certainty is that ordinary people trying to lead a normal life will suffer for decades to come courtesy of the United States.
Francoist Spain lasted nearly 40 years in isolation. The isolation strategy does work eventually, but it does take decades. The point is mostly to keep other countries safe from the dictators of these countries, since change has to happen from within. Sure the economic problems can create an incentive for the people of a country to change the government, but ultimately the people of a country need to want it for themselves.
And with North Korea, Iran, and Cuba, it’s not like they were completely isolated. These countries have gotten support from China, the Soviet Union / Russia, and Venezuela. Authoritarian assholes of the world sticking together I guess.

You do realize that the authoritarian assholes were basically products of the United States, right?
The Iranian revolution happened because Mossadeq was assassinated, and the Shah reinstalled by the CIA.
The Cuban revolution occurred because Batista, the US’ puppet dictator, was bleeding the country dry. Then Castro tried to have normal relationships with the United States and that quickly turned sour when it conflicted with the US’ business interests on the island.
Kim Il Sung would have been a nobody had the US not started the Korean war.
Etc etc.
Look at the history of the United States and you’ll find a trail of devastation the world over.
You think he’s not in the authoritarian club? Xi is helping Trump on oil prices, it could be in exchange for a green light on invading Taiwan, which will be a bloodbath. Though I’m sure Taiwanese drones would give China problems similar to the problems the US and Russia are having. It would be incredibly stupid for Xi to do that, but like all authoritarians, he surrounds himself with yes men so may be stupid enough to get himself into the same trap Putin and Trump are in.

That’s why President Pedo’s so pissed. Yet another club he should belong to, yet they won’t let him join.
