With all three host countries out of the tournament and no World Cup games today, some of us are emerging from a soccer stupor and checking in with our NSL, NWSL, Liga MX, MLS, CPL, and USL sides, which has got me wondering: what team or competition do Lemmings follow from the host countries? And, for those of you located in a host country, has following this World Cup encouraged you to support your local soccer team?
Why are people responding if they have no team or interest? Like wandering into a star trek community and going "no I don’t like this show "
Great for you but completely unnecessary.
At this rate Im pulling for England for Kane or most definitely Norway. Love the underdogs.
Follow many, many teams across the world. Most underperform
I wonder that too, and also why they keep replying with their men’s world cup side.
None of them: Spectator sports aren’t really my thing. Same for watching other people play video games.
I do watch other people play video games that I play. Usually because I’m too tired to play myself.
I could never really get into it but I can stand to watch clips if something really impressive happens.
I’m the same way about video games. Which sports do you play?
None seriously but once in a while soccer, basketball, and a little bit of baseball back in the day. I used to do some martial arts too if you count that as a sport, mostly Muay Thai. Hiking and biking are more my jam, especially these days.
Edit: Oh and archery/marksmanship if you count those.
None, professional sports are unethical. If I do watch something I root for the underdog to hedge my entertainment.
I don’t think there’s much unethical really happening at my local uslw club, but whatever helps you keep a clear conscience.
That’s the thing. You don’t think.
As opposed to you, who thought very carefully about the uslw and the account you were responding to before leaving this incredibly well-informed and nuanced response.
I don’t know why are you being offended here. You started a public question and got an answer. Professional sports being unethical is not my special magic take - it’s well established topic of ethics so if you are curious why some might consider professional sports unethical you have plenty of resources to educate yourself.
none. professional sports are like corps for me now. I used to say my favorite thing to watch is little league games but like wierd holding companies have bought out a lot of the local companies that put those on. Colleges are getting just as bad as pro sports. Maybe not quite but the money is just corrupting. At this point high school is kinda the best point. So for me high school and college level sports is the only ones I would care to watch. Not sure how much longer before they get wierd.
I lost a lot of interest when they put my Golden Bears into the ACC, but I remember watching Alex Morgan play for us fondly. Maybe your local USL2/USLW team is more independent of corporate interests? There isn’t much money in it.
yeah im not much of a sports guy to begin with but I had a roomate in college who got me to be a local team type of fan but again its so weird now I just went back to my nature and as I said I give high school and college a bit of watch.
Can’t take professional soccer seriously with all the flailing on the ground like children.
You should give women’s soccer a try – there is much less flopping.
DC United.
Who has the coffee pot cup currently? Is it the Battery?
Wut?
It’s a silly trophy the Charleston Battery and DC United have as part of their rivalry. It’s passed back and forth to the club that won in their most recent meeting, which is usually the US Open Cup or the Carolina Challenge (a preseason tournament) since the Battery aren’t in MLS. It’s a coffee pot to celebrate the time y’all trashed Charleston’s locker room after they beat you in USOC in '99. This looks like a pretty good history of the trophy.
It was Canada but since they’re out, I guess Belgium now. I don’t really have any ties to Belgium as a team or country, but they knocked out the US and they make my favourite beer so those are good enough reasons as any I suppose.
I feel like I don’t see you around !canadasoccer@lemmy.ca . Just a lurker?
I honestly didn’t know that community existed until now, but I joined. I’m not usually into soccer though, I just started paying attention maybe a month ago.
If you’re interested in finding a club team, there’s also a community for the Northern Super league !nsl@lemmy.ca . I haven’t found one for the Canadian Premier League yet.
I may consider in the future. I’ve subscribed to that community too now. You should make one for the CPL if it doesn’t exist yet.
Soccer is a minor sport in Australia compared to others. I don’t really watch it but after we hosted the women’s world cup a few years ago I did give the local A League a look. It just wasn’t for me but I did try.
I’ll watch the odd international game (even other countries) if it lines up now so the world cup did improve my opinion of the game, even if it didn’t convert me to a fan.

Save – and I cannot emphasize this enough – the Caps. You belong in the Cascadia Cup.
Champions of England, Arsenal FC 🔥🔥🔥
Have you ever been to a game?
Our ones are out…
I have decided for Argentina now. What they did against Egypt has given me hope for them.
I’m excited to see how Messi stacks up against the very best in the All-Star Game on the 29th.
Seattle Sounders and Spokane Velocity, mix in some BVB and Liverpool. IDK about the USMNT at all but love the USWNT
My heart absolutely broke for the Velocity fans when your USLSL side went under. How’re you doing in USL1? I only saw the loss to Forward Madison after USMNT-Bosnia match (up the mingos).
They are on a slide, hopefully it will turn back around soon. Gotta get to the finale 3 years in a row!
I don’t really follow soccer, but I’ve been rooting for teams based on which cuisine I prefer. At this point, I’m hoping Argentina or Morocco takes it.
An Inter Miami fan, then. Messi has been magical for you.
I have loosely followed Sporting KC in the MLS because they have a great academy system here. I mostly follow Premier League but have been thinking I might make more effort to follow MLS after the World Cup finishes.
I miss the old KC Wizards branding. Did you follow back when Lalas was playing?
I do see a lot of other people around here with SKC gear so there is definitely a following here.
Probably because you finally got rid of Vermes. He was a terror for you as a player, but wow was he tough as a coach AND sporting director at the same time for literally forever.
I didn’t no, but I think I might make it up for a game. It’s about a three hour drive for me but I think they are my closest team and run the local academies here.
So it’s like, basically just AYSO and high school in your area?
AYSO, High School, and some competitive youth teams in the Sporting KC Academy system
oh, oh I totally misread. Do they only have one academy side per age group, or can SKC have a U15 near you and another on the other side of KC but the same distance?
Uh… BEL because of Tintin et al.
FRA because of BD, and just being a Francophile in general.Ah, a Montreal Roses fan, I take it.
Never heard of 'em, but bonne chance…?
