Context: In Islam people must be identified by their paternal lineage, meaning one’s patronym/last name/however their culture identifies paternal ancestry must tie to their father. This is because the Quran says “call them by the names of their fathers” (Quran 33:5), and while the verse was talking about adoption the principle is unanimously interpreted to apply in general.

I think when people get married they should make up their own last name. Kind of like saying your future is yours to make.
We managed to get 12 generations into our family tree. I can confirm there are more name changes and weird things happening than you think. We definitely kinda used to do this…
My family’s last name was changed in the Third Reich because it was a German family with a Slavic name (which isn’t even true but who cares) in the eastern part of the Reich (what is now well inside Poland). I’m not saying that’s a good reason to change the name but it shows that it’s possible.
I wanted to make a joke about a fictional “Heilhitlervich” family name but it just isn’t funny no matter how I phrase it when we’re have actual Nazis in power again somehow.
For what it’s worth, I laughed.
I have a friend that, when she got married, they combined their last names into a new name.
My wife and I both have our original names, but we’re seriously considering combining into a new name. We’ve got one picked out, and it would certainly be unique.
