Context: In Islam people must be identified by their paternal lineage, meaning one’s patronym/last name/however their culture identifies paternal ancestry must tie to their father. This is because the Quran says “call them by the names of their fathers” (Quran 33:5), and while the verse was talking about adoption the principle is unanimously interpreted to apply in general.


My family’s last name was changed in the Third Reich because it was a German family with a Slavic name (which isn’t even true but who cares) in the eastern part of the Reich (what is now well inside Poland). I’m not saying that’s a good reason to change the name but it shows that it’s possible.
I wanted to make a joke about a fictional “Heilhitlervich” family name but it just isn’t funny no matter how I phrase it when we’re have actual Nazis in power again somehow.
For what it’s worth, I laughed.
