These include Sailfish OS, postmarketOS, Ubuntu Touch, Mobian, etc. They never gained a significant market share/adoption.

The baseband SoC has its own OS and manufacturers are reluctant to give out the info required to write OSS drivers for it. Security through obscurity and all that.
