For the fourth time in its history, the Endangered Species Committee met Tuesday to decide whether to grant an exception to federal animal protections. It chose to allow oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico to operate without regard for critical species, such as the Rice’s whale.
The “God Squad” is a panel of six high ranking federal officials on the Endangered Species Committee that has the ability to decide exemptions in the Endangered Species Act. It earned the name because the committee has the power to play God.
