Donald Trump has been condemned as a “vile, disgusting man” and a “sick human being” after gloating over the death of Robert Mueller, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Mueller, a decorated Vietnam war veteran who led a politically explosive investigation into Trump, died on Friday aged 81, triggering a callous reaction from the US president.

“Robert Mueller just died,” Trump responded quickly on his Truth Social platform. “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Even by the president’s own norm-shredding standards, the comment was unusually harsh. There was a chorus of opprobrium from the “Never Trump” movement in his own Republican party.

Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, wrote on X: “@realDonaldTrump you are a vile disgusting man. Petty and pathetic, you are a hypocrite who reeks of weakness and insecurities with no moral core. Regardless of the politics, the American people should be embarrassed and ashamed for ever having entrusted you with leadership.”

I get what you’re saying, but when 90% of them are like this (and have been for decades) mightn’t it be time to dispense with the pretense that “real” Christians are love-thy-neighbor, feed-the-poor types? Real Christians are the ones who exist in reality. In the US at least, this is Christianity.

Certainly seems that way, but I’m not going to stop.

I have a coworker who became a christian a few years ago and blindly believed and voted republican. They’ve since come around and see what’s happening. They left their church because they saw how mainstream Christianity didn’t actually follow the teachings and started their own church. They are selling their luxury vehicle because they don’t want to be materialistic.

              People can change.

That’s awesome. Your coworker sounds like a really cool person. I just don’t think they are representative of most Christians in this country. If anything, your friend is the “Christian”, while the congregation they left behind are Christians.

You do understand that starting their own church isn’t necessarily a bad thing, right?

People who have a faith aren’t all koolaid drinkers. Many of them live their lives in service to others.

One can, and many do, accomplish that without promoting mythology as fact.

The radical leftist communist preacher who gave people free food and healthcare and demanded that everyone provide those around them with the same care and generosity and that one spends on themselves?

They use his name, but follow none of his teaching or example and openly oppose everything he stood for.

The Bible is a horrible, sick collection of twisted, disgusting documents spanning many genres, but whether he was real or mythical, Jesus is a respectable role model even for an angry atheist like myself.

I read “this man” to mean Trump. And I agree that people who support him have no shame.

But similar to others in this thread, I do know leftist people who identify as Christian and do follow the actual teachings and lessons of Jesus. They may not be the majority of self-proclaimed Christians in US, but they absolutely exist.
