Her name isn’t on the ballot. She no longer serves in Congress. But Marjorie Taylor Greene is looming large in the minds of north-west Georgia voters as they prepare to choose who to replace her with in Washington.

Known for her hard-line Christian conservative views, brash committee appearances, and embrace of multiple conspiracy theories, Greene quickly became one of the most prominent Republican members of Congress after winning her seat in 2020.

“She did some stuff off the wall,” said Justin Leonard, 28-year-old firefighter in Georgia’s 14th congressional district, who voted for Greene twice. “Kind of making conservatives look a little right-wing and a little like nut jobs. But other than that, I think she did her job.”

But when Greene broke her unwavering support for US President Donald Trump late last year, the pair’s rift descended into a very public feud that ultimately led to her decision to quit Congress in January.

I wonder what side does Leonard think that conservatives fall under? Center? Surely not left-wing.

I get what he’s saying, probably because of my upbringing. But he’s saying that she made conservatives look a little right wing (normal Trump) and little like nut jobs (crazy). So, hes just going an extremely round about, redundant way to say she made them look crazy. Folks in the south view conservatives as old money republicans. Even some of the newer southern dynasties have caught flak for not being hard right enough. That’s why Trump was so big in those areas. They viewed him as someone who was challenging the people they felt had left them behind; take notes dems. They truly believe he’s doing something different. They’re just ignorant enough and stubborn enough to not see he’s destroying the country.

What is interesting to me is, he’s losing support with old money republicans. I’m still a part of a lot of inner circles, and these folks are done. A lot of them want to go back to talking about just money and leaving all social issues in the dust and use it as negotiating tools for more money. But younger republicans, aforementioned in the article, tend to care more about those social issues, while also believing trump has their back with the economy; ignorant.

A lot of fractures are happening in state houses across the South. You have younger, very hard-line republicans at war with the older, more manageable republicans. I saw one meeting where a speaker said, “I swear if you bring up abortion one more time, I’m shooting you on the floor. You won your little battle, we’re gonna only discuss the budget now.” I think the primaries are gonna go hard this year lol

You just described half of the people in this country… On all sides.

And if you don’t think your side has any fucking idiots then you are part of the problem.

The difference is the batshit insane fucking idiots on one side want to murder all non-whites, and the batshit insane fucking idiots on the other side want us all to eat vegetables and live in free-loving communes. There’s a difference between a lovable moron and a hate-filled asshole moron.

They are not fucking idiots. They are assholes who care far more about power and money than about the public in general, but they aren’t idiots.

That said, you will also find no shortage of people on the left who are furious with those three and want them primaried out. Those three were voted in for sounding sensible and logical and appealing to the center. They stay voted in because most voters are uninformed. On the right, though, voters will happily vote in the primaries for the MOST insanely illogical person. It’s like a contest to see who can say the most insane thing.

She’s going to run for president.

Don’t ever be fooled into thinking she’s an ally just because she got off the sinking ship before others and said two sane things.

The top two candidates in the runoff are a dem that’s a retired one star general, and a guy endorsed by trump. The dem was winning by 8 points or so.

I lived there for 10 years and while the ignorant redneck stereotype is certainly very well-represented there, there are also a lot more progressives than you’d think.

Especially in Atlanta and the college towns. And a LOT of Black people who are not politically represented in the media at all, but who vote regularly and often have progressive opinions. Stacey Abrams, for example, is a powerhouse of a political activist, as well as Georgia through and through.

This thing where a given state or region is represented as one homogenized whole is just the same old Trump us vs. them tactic turned in a different direction. Maybe it makes people feel better, but I got news for them: there are racist motherfuckers and nutjob conspiracy believers in EVERY single state of the union, and P.R. and Guam and the USVI too.

I moved to California, and can confirm: the people in the rural areas in this state are an awful lot like the ones in Georgia!

The only thing that stops Georgia from being a blue state is that Atlanta’s population isn’t quite big enough.

              Good point; I stand corrected!

(Any other difference between Georgia and more reliably “blue states” still comes down to having a slightly lower urban/rural population ratio, not ideological differences between the urban people of different states or rural people of different states themselves, though.)
