See. The entire point of the OG HailCorporate was that even if it wasn’t intentional astroturfing, posts and memes can end up being ads for large companies.
It was eventually co-opted to be intentional astroturfing (partially I think to make the community eat itself alive).
But my point is that even if you’re not specifically astroturfing this still unintentionally acts like an ad for Mug root beer and shows how far advertising reaches.
Ah, fair enough. I do so often miss old reddit, back when subs were a real community, not just shat-out content fitting the theme. HailCorporate, HailCorporate’s parody sub, PresidentialRaceMemes, and that Joker sub before it was infested with unironic racists were all casualties that come to mind. The only sub I really lurk in post-API scummery is AskHistorians, thanks to their zealous mod team.
