People in Beehaw are nice (thank you all for that), but I am put off of the idea of reddit-like sites because of how toxic Reddit became (and also because of it lumping all USians as you-know-what), and when I select “All” for all lemmy instances in post view, it brings back bad memories of reddit.

I am very sorry if i anger anybody in Beehaw. this is also the reason why I am not active in beehaw.

I’m kinda agreeing with this, but not as much for the reasons others are stating here.

Lemmy reminds me of reddit moreso in the fact that there is a lot of conversation here that just… isn’t really conversation. People read a headline, immediately form conclusions, and slam one-line comments down that state the bare-bones of that without any thought, without even checking if someone else has said the exact same thing.

And I don’t think most of that’s bots, either. I think it’s the structure of the software. Lemmy seems to be trying to be “reddit, but federated” with absolutely nothing more changed, and I think that’s a massive mistake. I’ve seen what thread-based social media can be like if an attempt is made to actually improve on reddit, and there’s several methods of doing so that work. Methods that encourage healthy interaction and behavior instead of whatever drives numbers the most. Beehaw even already implements many of them in the form of its core principles and moderation strategy!

But that still leaves the software. And the software doesn’t seem to give a damn about the problems inherent to downvoting, upvoting, having visible votes on posts at all, having the easiest thing to interact with be the comment box, etc. Lemmy copies an engagement-oriented site without stripping the toxicity of that. And it shows.

I’m not planning to leave or anything right now – I came here for Beehaw and I still like Beehaw, and I don’t browse outside of it – but man if I don’t have my frustrations.

Take care of yourself, do what you need to do and don’t feel bad about leaving or taking a break.

If you want to try something different, subscribe to communities that aren’t politics focused. Block users like me, if I come into a non-political thread and make it about politics.

It sounds like you care about other people which is great trait, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Engage with social media at your own pace.

The USA is stirring the pot, so you’re being upset with people here disliking the USA?

I get it though, a lot of recent accounts are just the same trolls, edgelords and shitposters you find in any community. We all have that uncle or aunt IRL.

Lemmy though has been much better imo, than F, R and the likes. I see more genuine conversations on here than elsewhere.

I do hope you stay, because voices like yours is what keeps us as a platform from turning into the one we shall not name.

Clarification: The government/administration is stirring the pot, but most/nearly all of the population is not. People need to distinguish / recognize the difference between the actions of a country’s government and those of its everyday citizens who are often powerless.

That distinction is the difference between a valid opinion and xenophobia.

Edit: Removed the example since on a second read sounded like I was trying to “say something without saying it” which wasn’t my intent. I just don’t have time to wordsmith it better right now.

Over half of USA’s population voted for this. They absolutely stirred the pot and are absolutely xenophobic. It is not xenophobic for the rest of the world to hold a grudge against these voters. My tolerance does not extend to the intolerant.

Over half of USA’s population voted for this.

False. Just over half of the voting population voted for this guy (and not necessarily any of what he’s done for the last year).

The orange turd won with 77,302,580 votes. I don’t have the number of registered voters in 2024 handy, but using the population of 348,320,255, that’s 22% of the total population who supported this guy. And even some of that 22% is starting to sour because things have gone so far off the rails, so I’d further estimate that 19% of the population are the true die hards who will follow him to the end.

This isn’t even factoring in those who would have voted one way or the other but were ineligible to vote or didn’t bother to vote. It also doesn’t factor in the Electoral College or people who didn’t understand how the Electoral College works and threw their vote away on a 3rd party or abstained.

You’re judge and jurying us all over the actions/behavior of maybe 19% of the population. If discovered a new species of bird and 1 out of 5 were red while the other 4 were brown, we wouldn’t classify the species as red birds.

Adding more to your point, voter turnout was 64%, so less than half of less than two-thirds of registered voters voted for him.

Good point about the proportions. I know the Republicans have done crazy gerrymandering and try every trick to prevent blue voters from voting. I’ll reiterate that I do hold a grudge precisely against Trump voters. The whole world knew what he was up to. He kept going on about it. I do not lump all Americans with the MAGA crowd obviously. It’s unfortunate that some do. You have to understand that my country being under threat of invasion by the USA is kind of heavy.

I feel ya. The anti-US xenophobia has really been rising here lately and I’ve just been blocking and blocking and blocking. I’m fine and on board with criticizing what the current regime is doing, but the way they lump you (presumably?), me, and everyone together as if we all have cabinet level positions and personally signed off on each and every thing in the news is just straight-up ignorant xenophobia.

Why that gets a pass is beyond me. Moderation failures all around, IMO.

im a usian but not magamerican and it has not bothered me. I get why people in other countries are pissed off just like I get why folks in the us are pissed off. I assume when it comes down to it they realize there are many usians fighting this shit. but its hard not to be pissed at the country in general. like I know there are russians fighting their system.

If that can help, Piefed has a few features such as built-in keyword filters or community titles filters that can help curate the All feed a bit better.

Piefed.zip is a well managed instance.

I think it’s less Reddit vs. anything, and just the basic fact that most humans are kind of stupid and prideful. That quickly turns into bigotry when other people seem to do something dumb en masse.

The same thing that has Republicans blaming black people for how bad “the hood” gets has Europeans et. al. blaming all Americans for Trump.

Humanity itself is just kindof a piece of shit, IMO…
