  • eh I’m going to take a wait and see approach.

The early alpha versions of COSMIC I really liked but over time with each new Alpha release it just felt…off? like kinda leaning into GNOME “please don’t actually customize me” territory? and there were a couple keybinds that just weren’t there. also it felt like it was getting slower with each release.

That being said I think if you just want a very simple DE with the option of good tiling then COSMIC is the way to go. It’s been awhile since I tried one of the previous alphas so if his release really is the shit then I might consider switching my WM to it.

  • I mean there’s no point to it, it doesn’t speed anything up.

For example this morning I had a client meeting (saturdays, ugh) so I went to the train station cause it has a mcdonalds and it opens at 630am. They have 5 kiosks there and one person manning the til. People who were ordering from the til were getting their orders faster than people who used the kiosks. I had to wait 10 minutes just to get a coffee and muffin simply because I used the kiosk.

And it doesn’t even make sense. I would have assumed all the orders go through the same system regardless of where it was placed but apparently not. apparently people who don’t use the kiosk get priority?

  • I’m in Canada, Toronto specifically and the Homeless situation here is just as bad as it is in the US. I do volunteer work for a couple homeless outreach programs and I’d say easily since the pandemic the homeless demographic has drastically changed.

The stereotype that homeless people are junkies or mentally ill has shattered. The people I’m working with now are, for now, mentally fit and sober. More women than ever, more elderly, more minorities that in the past generally didn’t have many homeless within them because their communities would help prevent them from being homeless i.e. Asians, Muslims, etc

So. Many. Have jobs. So many have families, children, and they are sleeping rough so that they can simply afford to have their kids or older parents or other family members continue to live with whatever roof they can afford over their heads. There are SO many that are sleeping rough because there is simply no room for them to sleep in the tiny studio apartment they can barely afford with their kids, wives, parents, whatever.

I’m handing out food to people who dont’ even look homeless. They can’t afford to BUY FOOD. All their money goes to rent or other important bills. I’m dealing with people who were on drugs and alchol who then got sober in hopes to get off the streets and find work only to relapse because there is no work or what work they can get isn’t anywhere near enough to get them off the streets so they slump RIGHT BACK into that hole because, and they’ve told me first hand, “There’s no point.”

Lines are getting longer every month, The portions for food and other things we hand out are getting smaller because NO ONE can afford to donate ANYTHING anymore anywhere near the amount we need to cover the increasingly rising population we’re working with.

And none of the politicians could give a flying fuck. None of them. Regardless of what side of the fence they’re on and how far away from said fence they are. We could have fixed this years ago, decades ago, but we chose profits over people. We made this bed a long time ago, It’s almost your turn to get into it.

For us volunteers this is no longer a battle we’re fighting in hopes of winning. No, at this point we’ve lost. Now we’re just hoping we have enough bandages to slow the bleeding as much as possible before we run out.

  • meh just do what Amazon does “Hey if you’re student you can get Amazon Prime for $5! how old are you?”

    me: “I’m 20.”

Amazon: “Ok here’s your cheap prime!”

/me groans getting out of the chair cause I’m in my 40s

Point being just slap up an unverified age gate and be done with it. Really, truthfully, whose going to actually check? who even cares to check? it’s all just a dog and pony show to please the conservative and “think of the children” religious nut jobs who have no idea how any of this shit works anyways. Just spend 2 minutes whipping up a site with a centered div that has a drop down menu asking “how old are you?” less than 18 send it to a “no internet for you page” greater than 18 “go look at porn” page.

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what’s REALLY happening that they’re requiring scanned IDs or faces or what have you. and no company in their right mind is going to fight this as it’s free and easy data collection. Bluesky doesn’t give a flying fuck as they’re just going to end up selling the data they collect.

  • it depends.

I’m old enough to remember when PC demos were a thing and essentially if a demo didn’t exist, the game likely wouldn’t sell well. Hell there used to be entire websites that ONLY had demos for download of upcoming releases. So now game companies don’t do demos anymore, I pirate the games as a demo. If it’s something I think I’ll play through and come back to in a month or two or even a year then I’ll buy it. If it’s an indie dev I’ll buy it because I want to support them.

If it’s something I’m no likely to finish or will finish and never pick it up again, high seas.

Music is different. I just soulseek everything. I’m not paying some crappy streaming service to then provide pennies to the artist. I can support artists I like via other means. Merch sales, going to concerts, etc that’s where they get their money.

TV and movies? fuck em. I’m not paying for that crap when 9 times out of 10 something that I like is just going to get cancelled after 2 seasons. They don’t need my money.

Books? nope, always pay for those.

  • I swear to god Republicans are wasting their talents on politics. They have such amazing imaginations. they should be writers or artists or something. like I highly doubt any of us would think “fuck Dairy Queen, I hate Dairy Queen. I know! i’ll go buy some MDMA and Cocaine and then plant it in their Ice Cream…that’ll show them!”

or Jewish Space Lasers. or Flat Earths. or any of that. Sure DiscWorld exists but wouldn’t you want to watch a movie about Jewish Space Lasers? …oh right Spaceballs.

Ok maybe Republicans aren’t talented they just rip off other peoples ideas.

  • well duh.

When it becomes impossible to afford to A. have a family B. hell even be in a relationship C. afford a home D. rent for the rest of your life and then struggle to pay rent or meet the annual rent increases and E. wages continue to stagnate there’s really not much of a point in living.

Add all this to the US healthcare system where if you get sick you essentially have to “hope for the best” or if it’s something incredibly serious you then become dependent on the kindness of strangers via a GoFundMe then yeah…it’s grim.

When I first moved to linux I used Mint for a week and then moved to something else. As always by EVERYONE it was suggested to me as a “starter” distro and I really wish people would stop doing that.

I, like you, had issues with it. Sound issues, Wifi issues, GPU issues, and doing personal research and digging the consensus was always “it’s an issue with Mint.” I was about to go back to Windows 11 cause I was like “none of this linux shit works”

THEN I decided to try a different distro, CachyOS, and suddenly the sound was fixed, the wifi didn’t randomly drop out, and my GPU worked flawlessly. I’ve distro hopped since then and those Mint/Ubuntu issues never came back.

Try something other than Mint. if you still have the issues go back to Windows.
