They introduced Shorts because TikTok threatens their monopoly. TikTok raised max length some time ago so they do it too. Now US is going to ban TT and they’re trying to clone some easy to implement stuff in hopes of getting users that won’t move to Instagram. Don’t see that happening because Google doesn’t understand what makes TT so popular. It’s kind of funny that TT recently implemented horizontal videos and it’s as half-assed as Google attempt at vertical ones.

I was extremely surprised that Apple let Christian publish this originally, they have blocked alternative YouTube clients for years. At the time I thought that Apple is doing this to spite Google who didn’t release native app for VisionOS. Christian had a good relationship with Apple and could deliver something high quality so there’s that too. Curious that they changed their mind but it’s safe to assume Apple and Google had to work it out.

They want free bandwidth (streaming 4k60), free computation (encoding, optimization), free research (codec development) and free storage (for endless amount of videos). Google sucking is a valid reason to piggyback on Google infrastructure but they seem to feel entitled to Google just letting it happen.

Yeah, they’re essentially doing trials where Arizona fab provides small amounts of sillicon that’s being validated against what Taiwan fab does. While it was planned for 2024 I’m guessing everyone thought it would be delayed. It’s quite a big win for US, they’re on track to secure domestic supply of fairly modern chips in case shit hits the fan in Taiwan.

How do you stand image scaling on 3DS? It’s either poststamp sized or horribly mangled by non-integer scaling on a very low res display. It’s the reason I keep DSi along NN3DS.

LLMs on their own are not a viable replacement for assistants because you need a working assistant core to integrate with other services. LLM layer on top of assistants for better handling of natural language prompts is what I imagined would happen. What Gemini is doing seems ridiculous but I guess that’s Google developing multiple competing products again.

I don’t see this as a China problem. It’s a lack of regulations and oversight problem. Allied foreign powers (or one specific power to be precise) push far right via social media onto Europe as well.

Agreed on all points but I have trouble believing that with this economy of scale there would be no money being pumped into R&D and in time some results of that.

China is the center of lithium ion battery tech nowadays. I’ve recently seen that they managed to bring down battery prices by 50% in the last two years and their EVs are cheaper than combustion based alternatives for 2/3 of models being sold.

That’s curious, I use Facebook a lot for local and niche interest groups and have never seen any cross-promotion of other Meta services. Probably an EU thing.

If there’s XMPP involved in that pattern then I question your recollection of events that happened. If anything this is going to be more like e-mail where commercial service providers might want to set up some obstacles to avoid spam but also hurt little guys in the process. We’ll see how that goes with EU DSA laws though.
