My friend’s grandmother never really learned Castilian; she only spoke Catalan. I think she could understand it well enough to watch TV and get the gist of it. We tried to get her to speak it once; she didn’t get very far. I don’t know if she was literate, come to think of it.

Most Lemmy users aren’t communists, so they obviously are allowed to join, except in the case of Lemmygrad, which is explicitly Marxist-Leninist.

Consider also that Lemmy isn’t the entire threadiverse/fediverse. PeerTube, for instance, is optimized for video, which dwarf the storage requirements of images.

The communists & anti-imperialists who regularly get banned from corporate social media have adopted it. Obviously that represents “almost nobody” in comparison to corporate media’s user base. Anyone else who adopts Lemmy is a side-effect to the developers’ core goal of creating protected communities for anti-capitalists and anti-imperialists.

Yes, they’ve been calling it an alternative, not a competitor. They created Lemmy because their communist & anti-imperialist subreddits kept getting banned from Reddit. Such communities are antithetical to capitalism, so they’d likely be banned from any corporate platform, not only Reddit.

Lemmy isn’t a for-profit endeavor, so allusions to capitalism are misplaced. Why the funds might be distributed that way, I haven’t the faintest idea, but I can dream up just as many benign reasons for it as I can nefarious ones.

Instead of drumming up Lemmy drama based on conjecture, you could have asked the developers directly for clarification.
