Of course, my new instance accepting my application did take its time. And I think that was several hours. But still: You give a few details today and continue tomorrow by subscribing to a bunch of communities.

This one is something I must disagree with. I’m using the instances (servers) I am precisely because the people running those servers choose to do things in a certain way. If they did them in a different way, I would be on a different server. In the Fediverse it is extremely easy to vote with your feet. The admins have very free reign over their instances, but that doesn’t mean that they have a free reign over the users of their instances.

Yes there is. There is no other police force than the national police. And they do choose what to enforce.
Not in Finland. Here the idea is that such inpectors cost money, and you don’t want to waste money.
They also refuse to hire more parking wardens because those would cost money – even if in the end there would be more money in the city’s coffers than before hiring them.
They can make a rule, but absolutely nobody will enforce it.
In 2022 it was impossible for Putin to use nukes, because launching nuclear weapons is one of the only thing in the Russia where the president really has no chance of deciding on things alone. Gerasimov is a professional soldier, and worked only because it’s his job. He has no actual values in play, except pride of being skilled at his job, and he will not allow his family to die just because of the Russia’s “honour” being violated. Similarly, Šojgu is a bootlicker who does everything for personal gain and the Moscow being obliterated by nukes is not something he sees as an acceptable price for anything at all. And in the Russia you need an order from the people in all of those three positions, or nothing will be launched.
Putin could never get Šojgu and Gerasimov to give such orders, and he knows that had he tried to, he would have lost his head almost immediately. Those people would have seen Putin as a direct threat to their loved ones, as would have most of who have any influence in the Russia. That would have been Putin’s end.
Now, the leadership of the military has been restructured to be more accommodating to Putin’s will, but it’s still not at a level where Putin can trust he’ll get both orders given by the other two people. And if he tries and fails … well, read above. His head will roll. Now he would actually have a chance of success, but he’s still maybe 80 % likely to fail if he tries. And actually… PACO.
Now is still a time when we can safely use military power against the Russia without a danger of a nuclear war. That time will not last forever, because Putin does want to use nukes and he is working to make it possible. He will, however, still need plenty more time for that. Luckily for him, especially Germans are giving it to him. Ironically, because they are afraid of nukes and don’t bother looking into how launching nukes works in the Russia.

I don’t think that’s really the case. The 700 000 soldiers will still wreak havoc if they return. They need to be absolutely clear heroes so that the people will accept the havoc, and they won’t be heroes if the Russia loses to anything, in any manner.
I believe the only reason the Russia is doing this is that they believe they can make NATO break that way.
But, it seems likely that the Article 4 discussions for Poland and Estonia will establish a procedure for behaving with further Russian incursions into NATO airspace. Once that’s in place and communicated to the Russia, we can react.
And in all analysis of the Russia, keep this in mind: Putin has never used Internet and is refusing to ever use it. He only accepts information from trusted news sources and his personal aides, all of which are liars. He is extremely strongly out of the loop regarding what’s going on around the Russia, and makes weird assumptions. I don’t think it holds water that this could break NATO, but it is easy to see why Putin would think it will.
I don’t think there’s a way they can crack down. They can bark, but they won’t bite. And if they did bite, people would ignore them and vote for other parties in next elections. Would probably mean that the right-wing extremist party “True Finns” would gain a lot of votes and would probably become the biggest party.
But also, the bite would be so toothless that it probably wouldn’t really have the abovementioned effect. Here’s why:
The Finnish police won’t enforce a crackdown like that. They have a habit of deciding what laws they care about and what they don’t, and this is definitely one they wouldn’t care about. The government can tell them to do a crackdown of a kind, but the police will just ignore that. If they are asked about it, they’ll say “we lack the resources for that”. Which is true. If you go to Wikipedia and see how many policemen Finland has per capita, it’s about one quarter of that in Germany, for example. They really don’t and won’t have any resources for that.

You could just read from sources you have subscribed to and skip the “All”. That way you don’t need to bother with content filters :) You also aren’t really forced to follow the communities that are about US politics.

How is it different, actually?
- Community discovery is different. Searching for something can be quite difficult on Lemmy.
I’ve never had trouble searching for something. Maybe that’s because before Lemmy I basically used only Facebook and there you cannot really find anything by searching anyway. For me Lemmy’s search works just fine for searching for what communities exist. Haven’t felt a need for something more.
- Lemmy’s community has a lot of tech-jargon which non-tech savvy people might find difficult to wrap their head around.
You don’t need to understand everything on this planet. If you cannot wrap your head around something, then don’t. You don’t need to participate in every conversation.
- How the banning system works on Lemmy is different than the usual platforms as well.
They’ll figure this one out if they ever get banned. Otherwise, it’s irrelevant for reading and writing.
All in all… Understanding federating isn’t strictly necessary for reading and writing in communities, but yeah, it is good to understand at some point. Everything else… Meh. Things that are nice to know, but you are able to follow communities and write in them just fine also without understanding those things.

I had to google the Dead Sea Effect: it means that when a workplace has a bad culture, the most skilled and ambitious workers are first to leave and those who have a habit to do the minimum will remain.
Anyway, I’d say this effect is weaker in this situation, because many workers are there truly to serve their country, not merely as “generic workers”. They might feel that they have something important to contribute to the society, which means there’s an actual chance for even some of the best to return.
