I gotta wonder why QR payment has gotten so popular in East Asia and basically nowhere else
What’s the difference driving this
They basically skipped cards and moved from cash to app transfers. QR code is a natural extension of the app to make contactless payments accessible.
You also don’t need a payment terminal. Even adoption of card payment in the West has never been fully ubiquitous (though it’s pretty close now) because of the need for a payment terminal.
I believe QR payments are popular in India as well.

My guess is the greater capacity allowing for the encoding of Chinese and other non-ASCII characters
