I use a black permanent marker on all blindingly bright LEDs. Most of mine were actually sticking out so was able to paint over them without messing up the rest of the device. Tones them down nicely, but you can still see if it’s on.
Is that how you make black lights?
I clipped the wires in all of my salvaged case fans.
