The problem is that the US and Iran don’t have anything that will get them close to getting a peace deal. Even if the USA were to leave the region, Iran’s claims on the Strait of Hormuz would likely trigger a continuation war as nations with ocean access to the strait wouldn’t accept the toll which Iran is trying to charge.
That’s nonsense.
They will pay to get their oil out because it’s more profitable than leaving it in the ground. None of the nations near the straight have a chance against Iran since even the US can’t win. So no one will go to war over paying a toll.
They’re just bitching because it eats into their profit.
Iran would not have charged a toll without the war in the first place.
I get why Iran is charging the toll and I get why the other Gulf nations are bitching, but I don’t see the tolls being permanent especially if the USA leaves the region.
What will likely happen is that the strait remains closed while longer term investments push oil away from being picked up in the Gulf, with the main loser being the Iraqi-Turkish set of ports and rail under construction to bypass the Suez Canal. Even then, Iran has exempted Iraq from paying the tolls initially.
Iran’s attacks have been fairly limited to try not to significantly attack non-American assets in the region as a way to keep the war from drawing in more belligerents. Maintaining the tolls has been a way for Iran to get international pressure to get the USA to stop attacking. However, once you remove the American threat, the tolls are going to be an intolerable economic pain point to the other Persian Gulf countries.
