Letter to the PM, seen by MEE, argues there is 'a wide diversity of views on Israel among Jewish people in the UK'

Leading members of Jewish civil society groups have written to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham urging him to adopt stronger measures on Israel and “oppose any further attempts to muzzle the Palestine marches”.

This comes as the Burnham government prepares to announce a raft of new measures on the occupied West Bank, including a ban on goods from illegal Israeli settlements.

    Among Jews with a religious affiliation, views on Israel’s recent military actions are far from uniform or uncritical. Only about half say Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza are justified. About one-quarter believe Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza

    But they are more supportive of Israel’s actions than secular American Jews. About 4 in 10 religiously unaffiliated Jews say Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians, and only about 2 in 10 see Israel’s current operations in Gaza as justified. The vast majority, 74%, say they are “not too” or “not at all” emotionally attached to Israel, a sharp contrast from other Jewish adults.

    Jews in various countries outside of Israel disapprove of Israel and its genocide against Palestinians. There’s a clear connection between religious fanaticism and Zionism.

    At this point its very safe to say the pro-Israel crowd are in a religious cult of Zionism. There is no separating these two concepts, even for self reported atheists who support Israel. We are dealing with a colossal death cult and anyone supporting Israel is a zealot in the cult.
