Saeed Kamali Deghani’s 2010 Guardian article about a woman executed in Iran played a significant role in setting the anti-Iran narrative of the following years. Titled “Iranian facing stoning speaks: ‘It’s because I’m a woman’”, Deghani’s “exclusive interview” relayed Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s accusation that the Iranian court was lying about charges of adultery and murder. The article said that the charges were made up.
Mina Ahadi is a communist Iranian exile who serves on the committee of Atheist Alliance International. She presumably has little reason to want to help the image of Iran’s Islamic Republic. But she has posted a screenshot of Deghani’s confession. In the accompanying caption, she says that Deghani had already confessed to her in 2010, and that he had begged her not to expose him in case he was sacked and sent back to Iran.

The part that she would have been stoned to death for „adultery“ is true nevertheless. Whether or not she was actually not faithful to her medieval stoneage husband is completely beside the point.
Death penalty especially by such methods is not ok. So Iran was rightfully demonized for it at the time. After public outcry at the time they stopped the stoning.
Also Ofc this in no way justifies the current round of violence in the region.

Sure the journalist may have made a mistake but it in no way absolves Iran of their medieval and woman hating laws. I already said it and will say it again: this does not justify a military intervention in the country. But it should make it pretty clear to anyone who is humanist or feminist that the regime there is extremely brutal and their crimes should not be belittled either.

This is similar to the 40 beheaded babies and Hamas raped women hoaxes. Western propaganda makes up false stories because the real stories aren’t sobby enough (and the US is basically doing worse to black people on a daily basis). Then when the truth eventually comes out people have already internalized the propaganda.
Sure Iran has its problems but there’s a reason why writers need to make up stories to really get the demonization going. Recently we had the US-backed terrorist attacks in Iran during the protests where Iranian think tanks made up crazier and crazier numbers of casualties to justify US imperialism.
The latest US economic sanctions are actual mass terror against Iranian civilians but we’re not going to get any Guardian sob stories over that
Hamas did in fact rape women and they did in fact kill babies (I don’t care if beheaded or not). This does not justify Israel’s response but it’s true. I feel like you want to justify your black and white worldview by completely ignoring the atrocities committed by one side.
Hamas did not rape any women. There’s zero evidence for that. This is what I mean with blindly repeating propaganda.

Is www.thecanary.co a reputable source? the article is making too many claims and no sources. not even link to the article that “the guradian didn’t delete”
It’s an opinion post attributed to “skwawkbox”, no actual author. The main source of the article is a post on Facebook, which cites a screenshot of what looks like an Instagram story.

Yes it’s very reputable. Unlike TheGuardian they don’t make up articles. You could have simply searched the title than write a long comment.

The screenshot was a bit confusing. I thought the admission of lying was part of the guardian article which I now realize it clearly isn’t.
Seems the guys has returned to Iran since 2026 which is around the same time that admonition surfaced.

The admission is not surprising, the surprising part is that he had returned to Iran at all.
Between 2013 and 2014, he also worked with IranWire.
Just FIY almost every English site with 'Iran" in its title are paid US propaganda think thanks. Iranwire is no exception. Just pure US propaganda slop of people making up stuff and the medium publishing everything uncritically.
Of course they have to write some bad excuse of why he returned and came clean. The biggest problem with Iranwire is this part from TheCanaray’s article.
But she (Mina Ahadi) has posted a screenshot of Deghani’s confession. In the accompanying caption, she says that Deghani had already confessed to her in 2010, and that he had begged her not to expose him in case he was sacked and sent back to Iran.
Which means even the accomplice says he CONFIRMED to have been lying all the way back in 2010 but he was afraid to be thrown away by the US propaganda machine and sent back to Iran if she outed him (at least that’s the excuse)
The Guardian has not deleted its article. The UK government, and its media allies, continue to support the illegal and murderous US-Israel war on Iran, even as Iran’s defence threatens to plunge the globe into economic ruin and Trump escalates sanctions and threatens nuclear strikes because he is unable to defeat it.
