Slavery was legal in Saint Barthélemy, though. It is a huge stain on the history of the Swedish Empire.
oh yeah absolutely, we did trade slaves even though it was illegal here. classic “playing both sides” stuff.
That is pretty much how it worked in most European countries at the time. During or in the late middle ages, slavery was outlawed in a lot of European countries. But none of that legislation applied to the colonies during the early modern period.
So a lot of European countries had to abolish slavery twice (or more).
