Whatever this is, tear gas, cs gas, is not harmless as is often thought. It causes permanent damage, and is actually a nerve agent, different than what we call nerve agents, but it hits pain receptors in nerves.

We don’t know what gas grenade it is or what’s in it. But there is old data from grenades that look similar, and those old grenades are safer than normal tear gas grenades.

It really should be said that this expert is talking out of his ass here. He hasn’t positively identified the specific gas being used, just a similar product by the same manufacturer, and he definitely hasn’t actually measured nor tested the gas at the scene. It’s an educated guess, but still a guess.
