2 or 3 parents can’t do jack shit to avoid this, short of removing the kids from school and having them homeschooled.
There are 3 main factors that allow this shit to happen:
- Companies with absolutely no values and only focusing on revenue, which ends up creating these bullshit AI “systems” that are broken as hell (Chatgpt 5 anyone?)
- Lack of legislations to serve the people that voted for these legislators to live in a better society, but they choose to self-serve and allow the same shitty companies to do whatever they want AND sell their shit to institutions, like schools, law enforcement and such, so that they can get money from them
- Authorities that use these same broken “systems”, don’t even test them correctly, and take for granted that they will work because they are too fucking lazy to even care, such as schools (that have authority over our kids because we have allowed it) and law enforcement (if they can even still be called that).
There is no way to justify any of the 3 factors as they exist today. These need to change if anything is to get better.
That there are parents that could be doing more to avoid this kind of shit? Absolutely. Will parents pushing for change do anything towards fixing it? Not if the other 3 factors don’t play their part as well.
And the reason fucking kids are so fragile today is because of us allowing everything to be called “bullying”. So, they joked about the tan, big fucking deal. Learn to take a fucking joke or go live in a cave.
Get fucking real.
Or we could have a legislation that would punish the companies that run these bullshit systems AND the authorities that allow and use them when they flop, like in this case.

However, consider the fact that you could talk with your wife, kids, friends or anyone for that matter, and the only way someone else would find out was if one of the parties involved told someone else or if you were too loud for someone else to listen. Now we have to go fully out of our way to keep anything under wraps, and even then, there’s no guarantee that nobody else knows.
I firmly believe this is the worst the world has ever been for privacy and individualism, and everything points to that everything is going to be worse moving forward.
Additionally, it’s highly that any of us lived through those times you mentioned, so I’m speaking from my own life experience, and I’m over half a century old.

I’m not going to defend the US and it’s tech oligarchs, they are all shit, but the way things are going, the EU and the UK are currently in way worse shape than the US in terms of all this 1984 bullshit.
No country is safe from this anymore, and we may very well be looking at the worse time to be alive when it comes to privacy, regardless of where you live.
You’re parenting the right way. Let our kids know about our past and how it compares to theirs, live it. And joking with my kids and their friends without immediately jumping to “that’s bullying”, you can tell my kids are a bit happier than the rest because everything is a joke to them. I applaud you.

1·7 days agoIf you like “unlikely to break, don’t mind my software and kernel a bit behind”, anything Debian or Ubuntu based will be fine. Now, if you want cutting edge, even if you have to get pissed and confused a bit, Arch or Fedora based, in my opinion.
At the end of the day it comes down to taste and need. They all work (mostly 😋).
This is the best advice, in my opinion, keeping your data in a separate partition (or a separate drive if possible). This makes distro-hopping a breeze, since your data remains intact between distros.
After that, jump around as much as you want until you find something you’re comfortable with.
Well, I’m keeping mine. I’m actually very happy with it. This article is full slop, with loads of disinformation, and an evident lack of research. It looks like it was made with some Ai bullshit and the writer didn’t even check what that thing vomited.
This I can agree on. They would have been better served and made it clearer to their users by clarifying that it is not ‘zero trust’ and not e2ee. At the end of the day, once the masses start trusting a company they stop digging deep, just read the first couple of paragraphs of the details, if at all, but some of us are always digging to make sure we can find the weakest links in our security as well as our privacy to try and strengthen them. So yeah, pretty stupid of them.
Where does it say “zero trust” ‘on Protons own page’? It does not say “zero-trust” anywhere, it says “zero-access”. The data is encrypted at rest, so it is not e2ee. They never mention end-to-end encryption for Lumo, except for ghost mode, and they are talking about the chat once it’s complete and you choose to leave it there to use later, not about the prompts you send in.
