A nest box occupied by a Eurasian scops owl might seem an unlikely place to find a live snake, yet that is exactly what researchers repeatedly encountered in central Türkiye. Across six breeding seasons, they inspected 109 owl nests and found the small worm snake Xerotyphlops vermicularis in 44% of them.

The reptiles were not simply turning up in empty boxes. They occurred only in nests occupied by scops owls, and observations suggested that the owls were carrying the snakes inside while they were still alive. The worm snakes, which feed on tiny invertebrates, were found moving through the nesting material, where ants and fly larvae can occur.

The young owls also appeared to fare better in nests containing snakes: 61% of hatched chicks fledged, compared with 29% where snakes were absent.

The figures raise the possibility of an unusual relationship, but they do not yet prove one. Researchers still need to determine whether the snakes directly benefit the chicks or simply reflect other conditions that make a nest more successful, such as food availability or nest quality.

An unexpected role for worm snakes inside scops owl nests

The species involved was the Eurasian scops owl, Otus scops, a small nocturnal owl that breeds across much of Europe and parts of Asia. The study published in Ornithology, titled ‘Association of nesting Otus scops (Eurasian Scops Owl) with Xerotyphlops vermicularis (worm snake) in Türkiye’ reveals the snake Xerotyphlops vermicularis, commonly known as the worm snake, a burrowing species with a diet centred on small invertebrates.

During repeated nest-box inspections, the snakes appeared only in boxes occupied by scops owls. That pattern mattered because it made a simple explanation such as an accidental entry less convincing. The snakes were being found in active owl nests, including among the material used to line the nesting space.

The observations also indicated that the owls were bringing the reptiles in while they were still alive. That is an unusual behaviour in itself.

Owls commonly carry prey back to a nest for their young, but these snakes did not appear to be serving as food. Instead, the reptiles were left in the nest environment.

The surprising link between snakes and owl nest survival

The worm snake’s lifestyle offers a possible clue. It is an insect-eating, burrowing animal, and the material surrounding a bird nest can contain plenty of tiny creatures. Ants and fly larvae, for example, may live or develop in nesting material.

A live snake moving through that material could therefore affect the small invertebrate community inside the nest. The researchers observed snakes both on the surface and within the nesting material, where they could encounter the insects and other organisms living there.

That raises an intriguing possibility: the owls may gain something from having the snakes around.

The nest data provide some support for that idea. There was no meaningful difference in clutch size or brood size between nests where snakes were present and those where they were absent. The difference appeared later, when the young had to survive long enough to leave the nest.

The snake-filled nests had a striking survival advantage

Among the young that hatched, 61% eventually fledged from nests containing snakes. In nests without snakes, the corresponding figure was 29%.

The result does not establish that the snakes caused the higher fledging rate. The researchers were careful to leave that question open. There could be other differences between nests that were not captured by the observations, and the presence of snakes might itself be linked to some aspect of owl behaviour or nest conditions

Still, the contrast is large enough to make snake’s role difficult to ignore.

If the reptiles are consuming insects living in the nest, they could potentially reduce organisms that compete with, irritate or otherwise affect developing owl chicks. Some insects may also exploit the food and waste associated with a bird nest. Removing them could change conditions for the young without the snake needing to interact directly with the owls.

The mystery of why owls carry live snakes remains

The snakes could benefit simply from being carried into a warm, food-rich environment, while any advantage to the owls might be incidental. There is also the possibility that the owls sometimes select snakes as prey but fail to consume them, leaving them alive in the nest. The researchers describe several possible explanations rather than treating one as settled.

This distinction matters because a mutualistic relationship requires benefits to both sides, not just an unusual association.

The observations suggest that something interesting is happening, but they do not yet reveal exactly why the owls carry the snakes into their nest boxes.

The unusual behaviour has been spotted around the world

The finding also fits into a broader set of observations involving owls and blind snakes in different parts of the world. In several cases, birds have been observed bringing live, non-venomous snakes into nesting sites, even though the reptiles are not eaten.

Taken together, such reports have raised questions about whether bird behaviour can sometimes create unexpected ecological partnership A predator does not necessarily have to consume an animal it captures. In some circumstances, bringing a particular species into a nest could produce an indirect benefit.

For the central Turkish scops owls, selective predation could theoretically have played a role over evolutionary time. If owls that happened to carry these snakes into nests gained a small advantage because fewer nest insects survived, that behaviour could potentially persist and become more common. But that remains a hypothesis rather than an established explanation.

      Dang stupid news! You are right, as soon as I looked at the second pic and saw the snake and worms… I was too excited about the actual text.

      Replaced the images from the article with the one from the research paper.

      Also looked up the snake itself to verify. Looks like a worm, nothing like the pics in the article. Does match that of the research paper though.

      Thanks for being less blinded by the excitement than I was so it could get fixed quickly.

        Totally understand! Glad to see that there is still an interesting story in there somewhere. I guess I jumped out gun calling the story fake. Makes sense that small insectivores would be in owl nests.

          I glanced at the pics, but it didn’t register. I had just got an early dismissal due to the holiday weekend, so I was trying to post before heading out, but they blocked the copy function, so then I was working on my phone to do the circle to select and couldn’t get a better look at the photos. Between that and the excitement that the snakes were in fact not like the ones in the photos and where eating the owl babies, but rather potentially benefitting them, and that it was the owls maybe consciously bringing them there, there was just too much excitement.

          I’m really glad you spotted it though. I’d rather a mistake get spotted soon before people decide to not care about the story. As you saw, it gave you an immediate bad impression even though this turned out to be fairly interesting, even if it’s light on details. I don’t know why they used fake pics. The one from the paper is a little less exciting than the actual news, but even if they just put nice stock photos of the Scops and the snake seperately, that would have been better.

          Parasitic infections seem pretty common in owl nests, and though I don’t think they’re deadly on their own, if food shortages or environmental stresses are present, it would compound the situation. I hope they find more answers now that they know this is something to look for.

        The paper doesn’t really say anything the article doesn’t. Just says hey we found this neat thing and need to study it now. My fav part was this:

        Owl nests might be beneficial environments for the insectivorous X. vermicularis, but it remains to be determined whether owl–snake interactions are a facultative mutualistic relationship or only misdirected predation or even parasitism, primarily beneficial just for the owls.

        Owls being stupid and/or selfish very much checks out! 😅

            Birds aren’t always so bright, but I’d think they’d notice free snacks eventually!

            I replied to someone else here, one of my fav examples of bird intelligence is when an eagle will return with a Red-tailed hawk chick, drop it in the nest, and then forget it isn’t one of its own babies and start raising it! I left 2 examples I’ve shared before in another comment, one the didn’t work out, which is normal, and another that actually did manage to fledge. Very amazing stuff!

      Still, that is almost 100 owls this season alone that have figured out which snakes are correct.

      Despite their reputation,whispers owls are often pretty derpy. To have that thing, an easy snack, survive in that nest seems pretty amazing. They aren’t supposed to be anywhere near the corvids for intelligence, and I don’t know exactly where this fits the scale between being braindead and learning to use tools, but this seems well up there to me.

      I’ll have to read the linked paper and see what more details we have, if any, but this seems like some really rare and exciting news.

        This was my first thought. But I don’t know anything about owls or if it’s common to bring live food back for babies to learn to eat

          I don’t think live food is common. Owls are ambush predators, they’re not fast and their beaks are relatively weak, and they normally kill by crushing on impact. The way their tendons are set up, they snap closed like a mouse trap on impact, and they have a really strong clamping force.

          That said, I have seen some owls eating snakes still moving a bit (do not recommend watching) but I don’t think that is the norm.

          The strangest thing I’ve seen is 2 cases of bald eagles snatching Red-tailed Hawk chicks, not killing them, and then when they drop it in the nest it starts begging for food with the eagle chicks. The eagles get confused, and just feed all the chicks. Usually they don’t make it, because the eagles are much larger and will eventually out compete it for the food the parents bring, but sometimes they get very lucky and do fledge.

          Nature is crazy and most birds don’t seem very smart, so there are some really crazy possibilities for what they will do.

        At work so not much time to read but were the nests box ones like a big bird house or natural ones? I’m not sure a normal nest would hold snakes very well

          It says nest boxes, which is both a little surprising to me at first that they found so many examples, but also really cool as it seems this rules out that they just happened to end up there by coincidence since they are burrowing snakes, so I’m assuming they normal go down, instead of up! 😄

          I couldn’t find much on how high to hand Eurasian scops nest boxes, but the lower of the 2 I saw given was 3.5 meters / 11.5 feet, which sounds veeeery high up for a tiny blind burrowing snake.

          Also came across this, which seems it would support why the owl would be happy to keep some pet teeny snakes.

          Bottom material. Owls and other cavity nesters lay eggs directly on the bottom of the cavity. Provide a nesting substrate by adding coarse sand or peat in the box. Do not use sawdust or wood shavings that may attract ants and are potentially dangerous for the chicks.

      From that article, it sounds like this is commensalism or mutualism, which are more specific terms than symbiosis. Symbosis is any type of long term interspecies relationship. Commensalism is one party benefits while the other is neutral, mutualism is where both parties benefit. There are a couple more types in the symbiosis wiki.

    Okay - those look more like scaly annelids than snakes. It’s the furthest point you can be from being a snake while still keeping the technical definition.

      The snake here is still a vertebrate vs annelids which are invertebrates. Snake also has one body segment, while annelids are segmented by definition, as the “annel” means “little rings.”

      If I came across one though, I’d probably think it’s a worm!
