“What do you mean, live prey testing?”
It’s release season, and that means making sure our animals have the skills needed to survive before they head back out into the wild. We make sure that squirrels know how to scavenge and build nests, that raccoons know how to swim and fish, and that owls know how to hunt. We’re on that final stage with our baby screech owls.
Wildlife rehabilitation often means making tough decisions, and one challenging aspect when working with predators like owls is live prey testing. It is easy to look at this process and feel uncomfortable - no one who gets into wildlife rescue wants to see another creature harmed. But live prey testing is an absolute necessity for ensuring our screech owls have a real chance at survival once they fly away.
An owl might look completely healed on a perch, but catching a fast, erratic mouse in total darkness requires 100% split-second depth perception, silent flight, and coordination. Testing live hunting skills is the only way to verify that injuries (like head trauma or eye damage) haven’t permanently impaired their abilities.
For orphaned screech owls raised in rehab, picking up a dead item off a dish is very different from targeting moving prey. Our babies must prove they have the natural instinct and drive to strike live targets before they are sent out on their own. Releasing a predator that cannot hunt efficiently isn’t giving it freedom - it’s sentencing it to a slow death by starvation. Live prey testing ensures that when an owl leaves, it can survive from night one onward.
Wildlife rehabilitators hold a deep respect for all living things. However, rehabilitation means honoring an animal’s wild nature. Screech owls are obligate carnivores; their survival fundamentally relies on their role as predators in an ecosystem. It’s a balance between empathy for individual animals and respect for ecological realities. Live prey testing isn’t a lack of compassion: it is the ultimate responsibility to ensure a wild bird is truly ready to go home. 🦉❤️
